/Where and why are we tackling?

In the wake of the promotion of public health, and improvements of medical equipment, population aging has been a global issue we are starting to face. In 2050, the aging percentage in countries in Asia and Europe will be over 35%, including Taiwan, we are getting thorny to face population aging.

/What can we do?
Under the circumstances of an aging society, there’s no way to reverse the trend, but we can carry out projects targeting the
retiring seniors,“Successful Aging” would be the best respond to our issue. From minimizing the risks of spending the rest of their lives in bed, it decreases the burden for the next generation; reorganizing a more appropriate space, keeping their body functioned and in health; engaging in an active life, remedy the retirees that are going through the empty nest period; creating interactions, bringing up the positive spirit in their lives. These are the main points to focus on.

/How can we start off & who are we assisting?

I wish to inject a long stay village into the society for the retired seniors to live on successfully. Related to Airbnb, people share houses to visitors, that’s the heart of the project, locals learn from visitors, and the other way around. In terms of location, my target customer splits up into two groups, the retired locals that are non-disabled or light disabled, and oversea visitors such as Japan. And in terms of age, customers should be mainly experiencing the following three periods.

/What more?

If we zoom back to the whole picture, we can connect the other long-stay villages around the world, making a sort of a club mate system for the people in their third life stage, just like migration habitats.

/Site Analysis

Referring to community, the age composition is mainly aged. To culture, Wulai is the only Aborigine region in Taipei, the Atayal culture is still deep in this land, which is very precious. About industry, the natural hot spring, the scenic trolley that was originally the forestry car, and the cable car are the highlights. The scenery of Wulai are priceless treasures, the wild river and mountains, the waterfall, and cherry blossoms are all very attractive.

About the environment, although Wulai Village is in the mountains, it is located at the intersection of the two rivers, so the landscape is situated at an appropriate height. Therefore, the surrounding mountains obstruct the north-east and south-west monsoon, causing a comfy weather even though it’s on the hills.

/ Concept

I claim harmful, scattered volumes as my long-stay housing. I wish to add layers on top of the currently existing buildings, instead of dismantlement. We are walking on the historical axis horizontally, but the architecture itself quietly forms into a vertical timeline. In the past, there’s the original Atayal housing under our land. At present, there’s the modern housing nowadays. In the future, the first layer would be the long-stay community space, this layer saves privacy for all the villagers, leaving a free space from the second layer, which would be the long-stay housing.

How will the locals long for cooperating with the project?

Besides the cost of accommodation, visitors would spend other local costs, and the locals would give back to their land, forming a cycle.

The first two are the community spaces in public A, since merchants are more tend to serve private bathing rooms, I consider the requirement of a public hot spring, and I suppose an open kitchen would be the best place for visitors to interact.
The clusters are split into two types, the first one with more privacy, separating the bedrooms with walls but facing the living room without doors. The other one that is similar to the Japanese styled floor bedroom, it may be transformed into other spaces during day time.
